Mike Bush interviews Koch scholar

A Koch Elementary School scholar received a special “sweet celebration.” Jrue F. received a fun-filled birthday party, courtesy of Sweet Celebrations, a nonprofit dedicated to brightening the lives of children facing hardships. Not only did Jrue and his classmates get to enjoy cupcakes and gifts, they also had the celebration documented by Mike Bush and KSDK Channel 5.

Jrue’s celebration will be highlighted on the Sunday night (March 2) 10:00 p.m. newscast as part of KSDK’s "Make a Difference" segment.

The segment is focused on Sweet Celebrations and its CEO Beth Forti, who has played a crucial role in supporting scholars at Koch Elementary. Sweet Celebrations has provided support to more than 600 families across the metro St. Louis area over the past two years, many of whom live in the Riverview Gardens School District.

While the piece aims to highlight Forti’s contributions to children and families across the region, Jrue and his classmates were selected as the feature story for Forti’s recognition. The story also featured Ariel Turner, a social worker at Koch Elementary School. Turner has worked closely with Forti and Sweet Celebrations to bring critical supplies and resources to support scholars.

Forti’s generosity has supplied most of the items in the school store, along with candy for the market and classrooms. In addition, Sweet Celebrations sponsored children for Halloween by providing costumes and donated two carloads of candy for the school’s festivities.

Sweet Celebrations focuses on making birthdays special for children who face challenges, providing them with “birthday parties in a box.” While the program cannot extend to every student, those in unique circumstances have been able to experience a celebration they otherwise might not have had.

RGSD is grateful for the support from Forti and Sweet Celebrations. Tune in to KSDK Sunday night at 10:00 PM to see Jrue and Koch Elementary highlighted on the news. A link to the segment will be added to this story after its airing.
